Prof. Gordon Wavamuno appointed new Nkumba University chancellor.

Nkumba University board has appointed Prof.Gordon Wavamuno as the new chancellor. The new appointment was announced on Tuesday 16th this month at Kampala Serena hotel.

Wavamuno takes over from Prof.Magie Kigozi who has been the chancellor for the last four years. Prof.Gordon Wavamuno will preside over the coming graduation ceremony scheduled for October this year in which approximately 2000 students will be awarded certificates, diplomas, and degrees in various disciplines.

Three candidates have been nominated to run for Nkumba guild top job.these include Louis Uringi,Ronald Kalema and NRM's leaning candidate,Paul Mugisa. The elections are set for 17th and 18th April.

Urgent General Assembly called, strike in the offing

The University administration is facing hard times since the decision to assume the powers of the guild was taken. The embattled guild government presided by the prime minister Anita Muhairwe has decided to call an immediate General Assembly to contest what they called a hijack of students ‘powers.

The meeting that was attended by majority of parliamentarians, both past ,present and aspiring leaders in the guild information centre resolved to stop talking and do some thing that will show their dissatisfactions against the University administration in assuming full powers of amending the guild constitution.

Following the suspension of Lufunya and his entire guild activities, the university decided to amend the guild governing document, some thing that abrogates article one of the same constitution that stipulates that the students shall make their own laws.

Other issues raised in the meeting to guarantee the immediate calling of the General Meeting were the uncertainties of the cultural gala and the next guild elections. “Do not think of even campaigning before this sensitive issue is sorted out”, one outgoing guild leader advised interested members in the next guild government adding that rumour has it that elections of the next government has been shifted from 2nd to 17 next month without proper explanation from the university.

They intend to later move on to various offices carrying placards in what they said will be a peaceful demonstration.

Lying world of Nkumba campus gals.

It’s unarguable that lies are now the most common features of human beings. It’s more like an epidemic, gradually getting hold of us, especially the campus female folk.

I was in a taxi heading to campus. Seated next to me was a young lady, of course gorgeously dressed, looking real hip. Soon, I was dumbfounded as she bombarded her guy with unpardonable lies.

Immediately her phone beeped, she brought it out, glanced at the name on the screen, breathed in and out twice, then feigned her voice as she picked the call.

She was pretentiously sounding like someone really very sick. She told her caller that she was in Entebbe, still very sick and was on her way to the hospital.

She even went as far as accusing the guy (Sam) on the phone of adopting a lackadaisical attitude towards her in her time of need. She concluded by begging him to pay some money into her account, so she could use it to offset the hospital bills.

As the conversation went on, I was baffled at her courage and boldness, because she felt so unconcerned about the judgment of the other passengers sitting in the taxi who were obviously eavesdropping on her call.

As she alighted at her taxi stop, the remaining passengers in the taxi picked up her case as the topic of the day.

Men and women alike were all condemning her, forgetting that just like the adulterous woman in the Holy book, nobody could dare challenge her in her presence because all of them could also be found guilty of the same sin.

Men cannot be exonerated of such thunderous phone lies. But the cases of women are more rampant and the grades of their lies higher than those of their male counterparts.

As if that wasn’t enough, I went to my salon to make my hair. There, I encountered a higher level of lies campus ladies tell.

It is common knowledge that hairdressing salons are places where rumors are generated and spread like wild fire, lies are manufactured, and then the good, bad and ugly news are circulated.

If you want to know what’s new or the latest happening on your street or hostel, just sit in any hairdressing salon in that area for at least one hour, and your ears would be filled to your satisfaction.

So that day, I rushed in just to have my hair cut short. As I sat down waiting for the barber to attend to me, I sighted one hot chic on the block.

Two of the workers there were busy with her hair and nails, while her hands and attention were on her phone.

Shortly after, her phone beeped and she received a call. She told the caller that she was in a salon making her hair and needs his help. She claimed to be financially stranded in the salon.

Few minutes later, one handsome dude walked into the salon with a bag full of edible stuff. He walked straight to her, handed over the package and some money, then sat a while with her and left.

It was as if I was monitoring and timing her; 30 minutes later, another guy walked into the same salon with yet another bag of goodies. This particular one spent more time chatting with her than the first.

Finally, he left and the customers and the stylist were murmuring on her escapades. But nobody could say it loudly to her hearing.

At last, she was done but her escapades were not over. She quickly put a call over to a guy who came over and picked her up with his car.

As soon as she left, there was uproar, tongues were wagging. Stories about her usual change of guys became the sensational topic of the day.

Lies were clamoring on each other. Ggwe tulina wolokoso mungi bannange.

But that chic has guts oh! Oy’omuwala mukuuzi

How she managed to convince three different guys to come to her aid in a salon still beats my imagination.

As known to most ,leadership is an uphill task. there are qualities one has to posses in order to succeed. Being courageous to be differentiated from ordinary members of society is what makes a leader.Nkumba university experienced an un rare occurrence of having a guild president who never completes his tenure of office.Lufunya Derrick, son of Erasmus Magulu maali,a legislator in Uganda’s eighth parliament failed to stand the taste of time. We analyse factors that first helped him rise to power and whether he really worked for it or the conditions at the time favoured him plus why he didn't complete his tenure of office.

Censorship from Okebe’s government.

Lufunya who held the position of chief justice in his former ally’s government had problems arising from inflating costs for producing a new constitution . The then parliament sought to get rid of him as they would not accept to be robbed in broad day light.To exacerbate matters, he fell with his boss Okebe, due to relationship issues and his censorship became inevitable. This was a blessing in disguise as he used it as a platform to campaign for presidency.

The Nnaabagereka factor

The only female hall of residence had trust in Lufunya even before he declared his intentions of running for guild presidency. Some never really had a reason for supporting him. They liked him because of his looks and indeed voted him to office.

Disorganized and weak opposition

His greatest challenger,Akwanya Andrew would easily have taken the day had it not been for the many contestants.Lufunya took advantage of Mahande Joshua’s complacency who thought all was well on the ground but was shocked when he only garnered a paltry 51 votes on the first day of elections. Other candidates in the race who included Cathy Kalayi,Deng Junior and little known Jane Kariuki provided minimal challenge ,all which worked in Lufunya’s favour.

The factors above seem to suggest that Lufunya’s path to guild presidency was more smooth than rough .It was therefore incumbent upon him to deliver to this supporters expectations but he didn't .Those interested in taking this top most job should avoid the following factors which led not only to the collapse, but also a stint of the last guild government in office.

Disrespecting the parliament

May be he would have served up to the middle of his tenure had it not been for his lack of recognizing the strength of the then parliament.Lufunya continued to manifest and exercise his powers without seeking parliamentary approval even on sensitive issues. For example when parliament censored Lubega Andrew, the then minister of information, Lufunya re-instated him arguing that he is the only one capable of serving in that position, something that parliament saw as abuse of office by the president and contempt of the house. They immediately declared war on him and his close associates Lubega inclusive.

The zambogo factor.
The Baganda cultural institutional grouping which Lufunya subscribes to was no doubt responsible for the mobilisation exercise that saw him rise to power.He however, failed to control its influence over him and ended up mixing it with his office. No wonder there fore , that even his ministerial appointments was based on how much support to zambogo one had. Infact many members from the grouping walked away with huge offices regardless of their incompetence. It is also said that zambogo always ill-advised him on all matters of how to handle students money and created ego plus regarding whoever never supported zambogo as a direct enemy to the president.

Parallel and poor advisors

Despite appointing different advisors,Lufunya never took any of their warnings save for only his left hand side man Lubega.Worse still, the advisors like Nantajja had personal motives and wanted to use their positions for their selfish ends. This resulted in mudslinging and mistrusts even among themselves.

The calendar factor.

The idea of printing calendars which were to be sold compulsory to new students at 10000sh was in itself not a bad idea but the handling was amateur. In the first place the selection of photos which were to be used on the calendars provided a huge battle .Secondly the returns seemed hard to be equitably distributed. In the end Lufunya was labeled a thief and self wishing who only wanted to use others for his personal gains .They fuelled efforts of censoring him and his exit was bound to happen. Those vying for the position this time round ought to take note of this if they wish to be creative and make more money by printing guild calendars.

Continued fighting from his predecessor.

It is not clear whether Okebe,the man who Lufunya succeeded in office wanted to be guild president foe life. The former continued fighting the latter even when it was clear that he could not serve in the new government. The reason is that Okebe wanted to destabilize his successor so as not to surpass his achievements.Okebe was always heard jubilating whenever Lufunya was in trouble. He is also said to have convinced some members of the new parliament to fail Lufunya so as he does not settle to deliver on his promises.

Uncalled for demonstration

Finally Lufunya on the advice of his loyalties decided to carry out a demonstration in front of the dean of students' office accusing him of interfering in the guild affairs. They carried beddings and vowed to stay there Trans night. This was the final blow that struck the camel’s back as the administration came out immediately to put all guild activities on hold and marked the end of Derrick Lufunya’s era.

Faces to revive embattled guild.

   Following the chaos that led to the collapse of the guild government late last year, other ambitious leaders have started soliciting for support to resurrect the embattled guild of Lufunya Derick in the coming guild elections set for next month. Philimon Badagawa talked to some students who think they can put Nkumba University guild politics right.

   Kalema Ronald is hopeful that he can take the guild to the next step. A strong member of the Nkobazambogo who also served in the defunct Lufunya government as the education minister is a second year student pursuing a bachelors of business education, majoring in economics and entrepreneurship.

   Kalema boasts of the huge experience in politics having served in various leadership positions right from primary level.

   He also thinks his involvement in external politics has given him impetus to vie strongly for this post. He is vying for councillorship in his parish something he says will help him convince students so easily. He says improving sanitary standards including construction of a toilet at the guild and other parts of the university are key factors..

   He hopes to put up a guild internet café that will help students carry out research and course works at a relatively fair price. His greatest challenge however, is his association with the members of the Lufunya government which delivered almost nothing and students are yet to forget all this total mess some of whom apportion the blame on Nkobazambogo which Kalema subscribes to, for ill advising the president.

   Kayihura Safiri Felix believes that he is born a politician though he has been seen losing at various political positions. The 22 year old Kayihura is also coming for the top guild job. He thinks that what the former presidents from the Law school have failed to achieve can be realised through his governance.
    Paul Mugisa,former Mp for SBA in the embattled guild government that did not live to their expectations is ready to battle it out this time as guild president. With a lot of courage and support from the school of business administration, Paul is confident that the students will trust him with their votes.
   Others who have expressed interest in the post include Zephaniah Hiba ligana 23(PAM), who calls himself the man of the people and Catherine Khalayi has not yet confirmed but it is rumored she might make a comeback.

Nkumba guild elections set for next month

The guild election set for late this month will be organised by the University administration. Unlike the previous guild governments that have been handling this exercise, this time, the administration is going to head the guild electoral commission.

   Nkumba Times has learnt that the nominations will be on the 22nd of this month and election is scheduled for 1st and 2nd of April 2011.
   It should be noted that the previous guild government served for a short period of time before it’s activities were suspended indefinitely by the University administration.
According to sources, this time the prime minister will be appointed by the president, something that will minimise power struggle in the guild. Elections will be conducted at the different halls of residence and not at the guild information centre as it has been.

ONE YOUTH REPRESENTS UGANDA IN THE COP10

P10 (Tenth Conference of Parties in Nagoya Japan) of Convention On bilogical Diversity scheduled for 15th-29th october 2010.

Jemima Apophia astudent from Nkumba University is among the youth delegation attending the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity being held in Nagoya, Japan, from Oct. 15 to 29

While there, she will attend meetings as well as provide input, serving as the voice of the younger generation. Apophia, who is representing and working with Jane Goodall Institue Uganda in Entebbe was chosen to attend the conference for her extensive community activism and involvement related to conservation and the environment.she finished her degree course in Environment management from Nkumba and hopefully she will represent Uganda very well

Apophia having attended the Asia pacific youth summit in Hongkong, experience has ultimately provided her with a sense of empowerment related to her ability to make positive change.Therefore, "she encourages her peers to take similar action, possibly getting, "involved with any community or global organization,Protect"

she is on the steering committe that wrote the International Youth Accord on biodiversity which is going to be presented to the word leaders.

 Nkumba guild president was last Friday censured by the guild parliament. According to the official information from the guild speaker,Ferix S Kahura,Derick Lufunya is no longer Nkumba univesity guild president . Lufunya says that he is still the president and he has threatened to sue the university. More details are coming..

Nkumba University guild officials went on a peaceful demonstration last week over the alleged deans’ involvement in guild financial matters. The guild president, Derick Lufunya says that the Dean of students, Christopher David Kasasa wants to take over guild powers. “The dean wants to be the guild president and control guild finances, the activities of the guild should be carried out with out any interference” Derrick Lufunya says.

They also claimed that the dean of students was using the guild car and had not given the car keys to the guild president who is supposed to use the car.

Derrick and some of his ministers started their demonstration at the guild grounds in the morning and later moved to the deans’ office where they put two mattresses and sat on them to express their grievances.

By the time the president and his group camped at the dean’s office, David Kasasa was already out. Later the vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Edward Mugambi intervened but his endeavors to convince the president to call off the strike were futile. “We shall solve your concerns, stop the demonstration”, the vice chancellor pleaded to the guild president who insisted on not vacating the deans office until their problem is attended to. Struggles to talk to Dean failed.

For the last one month, Nkumba guild activities were put on hold to foster reconciliation because the guild president was allegedly accused of causing financial loss to the guild. Lufunya printed and sold calendars to new students but the income obtained from the calendars was mishandled. When students realized that the person they had entrusted with power was embezzling money instead of serving them, students demanded for his censorship. “We expected Lufunya to server students’ interests, but his involvement in guild financial scandals means that the president has lost focus for the students’ cause” a student who voted for him expressed his worry.

The administration came in to solve the matter and a committee was set up to investigate the incidences under which the money was lost. And according to the findings of the report, Lufunya is meant to refund the missing money amounting to 590,000 shillings. However, Lufunya dismisses claims that he embezzled guild funds. He says that the money he is told to refund was part of the two million shillings that was stolen from his office a few days after he was sworn in as guild president.

“You should remember that leadership comes with challenges and am not an exception but all this is because of character assassination, I personally condemn corruption”, Lufunya lamented.

However, most students saw no guanine cause for the demonstration. “There are better avenues for solving such issues other than demonstrating” One of the students said.

The newly elected Nkumba guild government led by Derrick Lufunya has started off in high gear amidst criticism from the students’ body. Lufunya seems to be the happiest after the long awaited guild van finally arrived on Thursday 30th June. The van with registration number UAN 654R was bought at a cost yet to be revealed.
“We have incurred a lot of costs to assure that the dream comes to pass” Says Lufunya Derrick, Guild president.
The President’s movements have always been hampered by the lack of a small vehicle.This has been seen when the president is forced to use the bus even on minor occations which need only two poeple to attend.

Little did they know that they would loss in the campeigns.Just as any politician would think, all of these candidates had hope in winning Nkumba guild race-God forbid, they were declared political failures in that race.

After their fateful experience, sources reveal that most of them have disappeared from the political scene. Some feel out of place as most of them have been heard blaming their agents for causing their failure.
