Nkumba University board has appointed Prof.Gordon Wavamuno as the new chancellor. The new appointment was announced on Tuesday 16th this month at Kampala Serena hotel.
Wavamuno takes over from Prof.Magie Kigozi who has been the chancellor for the last four years. Prof.Gordon Wavamuno will preside over the coming graduation ceremony scheduled for October this year in which approximately 2000 students will be awarded certificates, diplomas, and degrees in various disciplines.

The difference between men and Real men

This week, I am touched and I decided to talk about men. From my little research, MAN stands for Master Appointed Naturally. Woman, stands for Word Of Master Appointed Naturally. I want to give you the difference between REAL men and MOST men.
Real men, put you on the phone when their mothers call.

Lying world of Nkumba campus gals.

It’s unarguable that lies are now the most common features of human beings. It’s more like an epidemic, gradually getting hold of us, especially the campus female folk.I was in a taxi heading to campus. Seated next to me was a young lady, of course gorgeously dressed, looking real hip. Soon, I was dumbfounded as she bombarded her guy with unpardonable lies.
Immediately her phone beeped, she brought it out, glanced at the name on the screen, breathed in and out twice, then feigned her voice as she picked the call.
She was pretentiously sounding like someone really very sick. She told her caller that she was in Entebbe, still very sick and was on her way to the hospital.
She even went as far as accusing the guy (Sam) on the phone of adopting a lackadaisical attitude towards her in her time of need. She concluded by begging him to pay some money into her account, so she could use it to offset the hospital bills.
As the conversation went on, I was baffled at her courage and boldness, because she felt so unconcerned about the judgment of the other passengers sitting in the taxi who were obviously eavesdropping on her call.
As she alighted at her taxi stop, the remaining passengers in the taxi picked up her case as the topic of the day.
Men and women alike were all condemning her, forgetting that just like the adulterous woman in the Holy book, nobody could dare challenge her in her presence because all of them could also be found guilty of the same sin.
Men cannot be exonerated of such thunderous phone lies. But the cases of women are more rampant and the grades of their lies higher than those of their male counterparts.
As if that wasn’t enough, I went to my salon to make my hair. There, I encountered a higher level of lies campus ladies tell.
It is common knowledge that hairdressing salons are places where rumors are generated and spread like wild fire, lies are manufactured, and then the good, bad and ugly news are circulated.
If you want to know what’s new or the latest happening on your street or hostel, just sit in any hairdressing salon in that area for at least one hour, and your ears would be filled to your satisfaction.
So that day, I rushed in just to have my hair cut short. As I sat down waiting for the barber to attend to me, I sighted one hot chic on the block.
Two of the workers there were busy with her hair and nails, while her hands and attention were on her phone.
Shortly after, her phone beeped and she received a call. She told the caller that she was in a salon making her hair and needs his help. She claimed to be financially stranded in the salon.
Few minutes later, one handsome dude walked into the salon with a bag full of edible stuff. He walked straight to her, handed over the package and some money, then sat a while with her and left.
It was as if I was monitoring and timing her; 30 minutes later, another guy walked into the same salon with yet another bag of goodies. This particular one spent more time chatting with her than the first.
Finally, he left and the customers and the stylist were murmuring on her escapades. But nobody could say it loudly to her hearing.
At last, she was done but her escapades were not over. She quickly put a call over to a guy who came over and picked her up with his car.
As soon as she left, there was uproar, tongues were wagging. Stories about her usual change of guys became the sensational topic of the day.
Lies were clamoring on each other. Ggwe tulina wolokoso mungi bannange.
But that chic has guts oh! Oy’omuwala mukuuzi
How she managed to convince three different guys to come to her aid in a salon still beats my imagination.

As known to most ,leadership is an uphill task. there are qualities one has to posses in order to succeed. Being courageous to be differentiated from ordinary members of society is what makes a leader.Nkumba university experienced an un rare occurrence of having a guild president who never completes his tenure of office.Lufunya Derrick, son of Erasmus Magulu maali,a legislator in Uganda’s eighth parliament failed to stand the taste of time. We analyse factors that first helped him rise to power and whether he really worked for it or the conditions at the time favoured him plus why he didn't complete his tenure of office.
Censorship from Okebe’s government.
Lufunya who held the position of chief justice in his former ally’s government had problems arising from inflating costs for producing a new constitution . The then parliament sought to get rid of him as they would not accept to be robbed in broad day light.To exacerbate matters, he fell with his boss Okebe, due to relationship issues and his censorship became inevitable. This was a blessing in disguise as he used it as a platform to campaign for presidency.
The Nnaabagereka factor
The only female hall of residence had trust in Lufunya even before he declared his intentions of running for guild presidency. Some never really had a reason for supporting him. They liked him because of his looks and indeed voted him to office.
Disorganized and weak opposition
His greatest challenger,Akwanya Andrew would easily have taken the day had it not been for the many contestants.Lufunya took advantage of Mahande Joshua’s complacency who thought all was well on the ground but was shocked when he only garnered a paltry 51 votes on the first day of elections. Other candidates in the race who included Cathy Kalayi,Deng Junior and little known Jane Kariuki provided minimal challenge ,all which worked in Lufunya’s favour.
The factors above seem to suggest that Lufunya’s path to guild presidency was more smooth than rough .It was therefore incumbent upon him to deliver to this supporters expectations but he didn't .Those interested in taking this top most job should avoid the following factors which led not only to the collapse, but also a stint of the last guild government in office.
Disrespecting the parliament
May be he would have served up to the middle of his tenure had it not been for his lack of recognizing the strength of the then parliament.Lufunya continued to manifest and exercise his powers without seeking parliamentary approval even on sensitive issues. For example when parliament censored Lubega Andrew, the then minister of information, Lufunya re-instated him arguing that he is the only one capable of serving in that position, something that parliament saw as abuse of office by the president and contempt of the house. They immediately declared war on him and his close associates Lubega inclusive.
The zambogo factor.
The Baganda cultural institutional grouping which Lufunya subscribes to was no doubt responsible for the mobilisation exercise that saw him rise to power.He however, failed to control its influence over him and ended up mixing it with his office. No wonder there fore , that even his ministerial appointments was based on how much support to zambogo one had. Infact many members from the grouping walked away with huge offices regardless of their incompetence. It is also said that zambogo always ill-advised him on all matters of how to handle students money and created ego plus regarding whoever never supported zambogo as a direct enemy to the president.

Parallel and poor advisors
Despite appointing different advisors,Lufunya never took any of their warnings save for only his left hand side man Lubega.Worse still, the advisors like Nantajja had personal motives and wanted to use their positions for their selfish ends. This resulted in mudslinging and mistrusts even among themselves.
The calendar factor.
The idea of printing calendars which were to be sold compulsory to new students at 10000sh was in itself not a bad idea but the handling was amateur. In the first place the selection of photos which were to be used on the calendars provided a huge battle .Secondly the returns seemed hard to be equitably distributed. In the end Lufunya was labeled a thief and self wishing who only wanted to use others for his personal gains .They fuelled efforts of censoring him and his exit was bound to happen. Those vying for the position this time round ought to take note of this if they wish to be creative and make more money by printing guild calendars.
Continued fighting from his predecessor.
It is not clear whether Okebe,the man who Lufunya succeeded in office wanted to be guild president foe life. The former continued fighting the latter even when it was clear that he could not serve in the new government. The reason is that Okebe wanted to destabilize his successor so as not to surpass his achievements.Okebe was always heard jubilating whenever Lufunya was in trouble. He is also said to have convinced some members of the new parliament to fail Lufunya so as he does not settle to deliver on his promises.
Uncalled for demonstration
Finally Lufunya on the advice of his loyalties decided to carry out a demonstration in front of the dean of students' office accusing him of interfering in the guild affairs. They carried beddings and vowed to stay there Trans night. This was the final blow that struck the camel’s back as the administration came out immediately to put all guild activities on hold and marked the end of Derrick Lufunya’s era.

Nkumba guild president leads strike.

Nkumba University guild officials went on a peaceful demonstration last week over the alleged deans’ involvement in guild financial matters. The guild president, Derick Lufunya says that the Dean of students, Christopher David Kasasa wants to take over guild powers. “The dean wants to be the guild president and control guild finances, the activities of the guild should be carried out with out any interference” Derrick Lufunya says.
They also claimed that the dean of students was using the guild car and had not given the car keys to the guild president who is supposed to use the car.
Derrick and some of his ministers started their demonstration at the guild grounds in the morning and later moved to the deans’ office where they put two mattresses and sat on them to express their grievances.
By the time the president and his group camped at the dean’s office, David Kasasa was already out. Later the vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Edward Mugambi intervened but his endeavors to convince the president to call off the strike were futile. “We shall solve your concerns, stop the demonstration”, the vice chancellor pleaded to the guild president who insisted on not vacating the deans office until their problem is attended to. Struggles to talk to Dean failed.
For the last one month, Nkumba guild activities were put on hold to foster reconciliation because the guild president was allegedly accused of causing financial loss to the guild. Lufunya printed and sold calendars to new students but the income obtained from the calendars was mishandled. When students realized that the person they had entrusted with power was embezzling money instead of serving them, students demanded for his censorship. “We expected Lufunya to server students’ interests, but his involvement in guild financial scandals means that the president has lost focus for the students’ cause” a student who voted for him expressed his worry.
The administration came in to solve the matter and a committee was set up to investigate the incidences under which the money was lost. And according to the findings of the report, Lufunya is meant to refund the missing money amounting to 590,000 shillings. However, Lufunya dismisses claims that he embezzled guild funds. He says that the money he is told to refund was part of the two million shillings that was stolen from his office a few days after he was sworn in as guild president.
“You should remember that leadership comes with challenges and am not an exception but all this is because of character assassination, I personally condemn corruption”, Lufunya lamented.
However, most students saw no guanine cause for the demonstration. “There are better avenues for solving such issues other than demonstrating” One of the students said.

The newly elected Nkumba guild government led by Derrick Lufunya has started off in high gear amidst criticism from the students’ body. Lufunya seems to be the happiest after the long awaited guild van finally arrived on Thursday 30th June. The van with registration number UAN 654R was bought at a cost yet to be revealed.
“We have incurred a lot of costs to assure that the dream comes to pass” Says Lufunya Derrick, Guild president.
The President’s movements have always been hampered by the lack of a small vehicle.This has been seen when the president is forced to use the bus even on minor occations which need only two poeple to attend.

The outspoken parliamentarian,Haumba Michael will not contest in the coming guild elections.,Nkumba Times has learnt.The ambitious politician revealed to Times that he has a busy scheduled and can’t participate in Nkumba guild race. Haumba is currently campaigning in his home district,Butaleja where he wants to become the LCV chairman.
“Nkumba politics is still young, even those who are coming need political guidance, otherwise they can’t manage”Haumba disclosed.
.In a two minutes interview,Haumba blamed students who want guild leadership based on personal gains. He pointed out the rampant corruption in the current guild government. .
”Our so called leaders in the guild are ever corrupted whenever the money is out, in this way, these guild leaders have always lost focus on issues patterning students' interests”Haumba said adding that unless the trend changes, the students will always be left out.
Zambogo boycotts cultural day.

The Baganda Nkobazamogo boycotted the annual cultural day that was conducted at Ssese Gate way beach last month. They claimed that the guild gave them little money for facilitation.
Nkumba guild government led by Okebe Nathan gave out an equal amount of money that tattled to 200,000 shillings for each cultural association. However to the Zambongo, this was too little.
The cultural minister failed to comment on this saying that they had other issues that made them not to participate.
Some members revealed that their failure to take part in the cultural exhibition was as a result of the death of people during the closing prayers for the five days mourning of Kasubi fire.
Over 18 cultures exhibited their cultural normes and traditions.These included the traditional dance,way of greeting,songs,local dishes among other things.
The occasion was graced by Hon.JB Balikudembe,MP for Busiiro south. He cautioned the students to recognize each ones culture. Blikudembe also advised students to join politics since they can do a lot while in power. You can make a commendable change in the Ugandan politics today..." He told the students.

Student petitions Nkumba guild speaker over electoral reforms

A third-year law student Apollo Oloo John 26 has lodged a complaint with the speaker of the house (Nkumba Varsity) to hold an urgent Parliamentary session to debate matters of electoral reforms.
In a petition letter dated March14 to the speaker Hon: Kago Mahande Joshua, Mr. Oloo pointed out two electoral reforms; these include disbanding all members of the outgoing executive and getting an independent electoral commission. Members of the outgoing executive, go on a wild card basis as electoral commissioners with the Justice Minister being the chair of EC raising doubt over the competence of these members.
Secondly, he said that the two voting days that is Friday and Saturday should be changed to a single day on grounds that vote rigging and alliances are bound to happen. When Nkumba Times asked him the rationale behind his electoral reforms, he had this to say “I was a victim of circumstances; I lost last guild elections by virtue of political alliance after leading the first voting day.” In the petition letter, he said that “There is no specialty case for Nkumba since other University vote on one day.”
Mr. Oloo was the runner-up in the last guild elections were five candidates vied for the seat. Mr. Okebe Nathan emerged the winner in a hard fought victory after making coalition with Mr. Opolot Simon Luke who earned himself a position of Finance Minster.
The former EC chairman Mr. Nuwahereza Hilary gave his voice over the matter “I support him and that provision is included in the Constitution that I amended.” However, the amend Constitution both hard and soft copy got lost mysteriously that, led to the sacking of Lufunya Derick as Justice Minster.
The move comes at a time when the guild elections are only a month a way in which Oloo has declared interest. However, he told Nkumba Times that he will not contest if his petition flops. He is pitted against Khalayi Catherine, Lufunya Derick, Mbabazi Cleophus, Kago Mahande Joshua, Kiyimba Tony all law students, Junior William Dng and Negesa Ninah Zainah a journalism student.

Cultural day is a top item on the social calendar of Nkumba as various cultures showcase their art, music, dressing code among other intellectual aspects to a press of people.
The 17th cultural gala is scheduled to take place on 27 March at Ssese gateway beach where 20 cultural associations will take part these include Baganda Nkobazambogo, Basoga Nsette, Rwanda students cultural association among others.
The theme for this year’s cultural day is cultural tolerance, peace and prosperity and
Six items will be presented on that day; these include a traditional dialogue of how you greet and welcome visitors, dressing, food preparation, folk songs, and cultural anthem all in the context of culture among others.
All cultural associations are to get two hundred shillings as facilitation fee from the guild. However, during a meeting of cultural heads that took place in PK Mukasa room at the law school on Monday 15, the Cultural Minster Mr. Kinene Isaac told member of the meeting that the guild executive sat and reached a resolution that in the meantime, fifty thousand shilling should be distributed out to each association as in what the executive termed as committeement to training.
Eyebrows were raised on amount of money the guild has given out “I’m very unhappy with two hundred shilling because for us we are over two hundred students, how will that money help us,” Mugabe Robert Sectary Banyakitala cultural students association lamented.
Other cultural heads suggested to off call the event on grounds of insufficient funds, this generated a remark from the State Minster for culture Mr. Okello Patrick “By now we expected you to be with some money on your account through lobbying to top up the two hundred shillings,” he said.
The guild president Okebe Nathan told Nkumba Times that the event will be colorful because it’s the last event that sends off the guild and compensates for the guild activities that relatively flopped citing an example of Miss Nkumba beauty contest. In the evening after super cultural day becomes the talk of the night as most associations practice at that moment up to 10pm.
When Nkumba Times reached the managers of the venue, a lady identified as Mama Nalongo said drinks will go at two thousand five hundred shillings and food at five thousand on that day.

Scientific evidence reinforcing the importance of key whole food nutrient in maximizing health, vitality, and longevity continues to mount.
Too much of the wrong food sets a cause for diseases. A study published in August ,2007 issue of the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) calls for attention to the severe health risks associated with our western diet, which is grossly deficient in whole food nutrients from fruits, vegetables, grains and fish but excessive in processed fats, carbohydrates and calories. While evaluating colorectal cancer recurrence, researchers from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston demonstrated that 80% of all colorectal cancer cases were both directly or indirectly attributable to the western industrialized eating habit and preventable with dietary change. There recommendation for reducing this risk a prudent diet rich in fruits, vegetables, poultry and fish.
Getting in abundance of the right food is the path to long term health. As published in the July 2007 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers from Monash University and the cancer council of Victoria, the University of Melbourne report that, “this combination of fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 dietary content is believed to have anti oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti thrombotic properties that reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases by 30%”. These nutrients have also been shown to lower the rate of incidence for obesity and various cancers.
Much of the nutrients in our foods is lost during the industrial growing and processing! According to a research from Wageningen University in Holland published in the November 2005 issue of journal of food chemistry, nearly every phase of processing food “farm to fork” reduces the level of healthy phytonutrients in fruits and vegetables.
Modern industrialized diets are directly linked to diseases. The diet that has dominated the industrial world for the last few decades is directly related to the epidemic of chronic disease. Foods consumed by the average human today are not only energy-dense and nutrient-deficient, but also lack nutritional diversity fundamental to healthy human bio chemistry. Overflowing with processed fats, carbohydrates and chemicals that are alien to the human food chain, modern diet lives us overfed, under-nourished and needlessly exposed to vitality robbing health problems, like obesity, pressure, diabetes etc.
Whole food supplementation is the only strategy that works. Because changing our diets is not an easy or convenient transition for someone who is living in a quick pace of the modern industrialized world. Electoral reforms are necessary before the next guild elections.
A number of students have shown interests in vying for the different positions as the tenure of the current guild government is soon coming to an end. The guild president is the top head as stipulated in the guild constitution no wonder majority of those who have so far expressed their intentions to stand do not mention other positions apart from this.
There are however outstanding questions as to why Nkumba University guild elections take place for two days. The brain behind this claim is that they want to give an equal opportunity to
weekend students to exercise their political rights in voting their leaders, but again this is not the only place in the world where elections take place .
Even in the world’s super power America, apart from those who vote on line, elections world over take place in only one day and Nkumba is not a special case. It is therefore possible to turn around events unlike when every thing is cleared with in one day.
The electoral commission should be independent so as to organize free and fair elections. For long the judiciary which is composed of members from the law school has been executing this duty. This can easily arouse assumptions that other candidates from different schools may not receive fair electoral treatment compared to their counterparts from the law school. The best solution to this would be getting equal representation from all the schools to this body and also involving monitors from other universities but how realistic is this?
Other necessary reforms could be leveling the ground for all the aspirants in terms of setting aside campaign rules and regulations with the university administration avoiding sidelining with some candidates.
