If communication skills or HIV/AIDS and development are not part of your course units, you may wonder why Nkumba times is saying that lecture rooms at Nkumba University can no longer accommodate the ever increasing number of students enrolled especially during the previous two intakes.
Some lectures have become so complicated not because lecturers dodge but the large number of students has posed a new challenge to the University administration of finding a possible remedy. some students do stand in doorways or windows so as to listen to their lecturer. Kintu halls are the University’s sizable study rooms ,but if they can’t accommodate all the students of a particular school say education, then you can imagine what happens when they are joined by their counterparts from the school of social sciences or that of hospitality and Environmental management yet there are particular course units which combine them.
Besides the width of these lecture rooms, the issue of seats in them also leaves a lot to be desired. Go to SHES building and you discover how students carry seats from one room to another whenever the lecturer arrives. To be honest, there are many rooms at this particular building (SHES), but seats are no where; actually one student was right when she said that “The number of seats here is less than that of lecture rooms”. She lamented this following a lecture which was meant to commence at 11:30am started an hour later just because there were no seats in every room they went to.
Some schools such as the school of law are however relatively okay not because all the facilities are available but due to their smaller number and occupying almost all the top positions in the guild and other areas including cultural groups, have less to complain. This though does not imply that they should be ignored as the numbers of such students to be enrolled for the course may increase in a near future. The school of industrial art and design is also facing its own problems as most of the time requires tools and additions, being a practical course.
However, if there are any schools that require urgent attention in terms of space and other facilities like loud speakers, seats among others, the school of Business administration and social sciences should have the priority for factors well known by every body.
Examination time is one that you should never pray that it comes so fast even if you’re thoroughly prepared. The truth is, this is the most challenging moment to the university administrators as they are sometimes forced to change the time table as all the schools do their exams at ago apart from the school of law. This time around it may be more worse if no urgent measures are laid as the new library which was used as one of the rooms that occupied many exam sessions is now a full library whereas the old one is used for some other things and even if it was free, how many students could it accommodate with its limited size?
